Yup. A religion post. I'll try to keep it brief. Well, basically, as you probably know, I'm an agnostic, and so am undecided and I don't see myself making a decision any time soon.
OK, so let's say there is no God, the world is just an accident; a floating load of material created out of nowhere...So here we are, in the vast universe in which we inhabit...an insignificant, almost invisible dot. Well, if life was an accident, then surely that would mean we have no purpose? If life has no purpose, then why is it existing? Existing would surely be pointless if we have to reason to be there. What advantages to the universe are there for some pointless life to be created? Why would it come into existence if it has no reason? Surely everything has a reason? Or maybe not; maybe it's just comforting to think so, otherwise, we're unprotected, vulnerable, unimportant, alone. If there is no point in life existing, then surely there is no point in keeping it?
Well, let's say in a world with God, whether we feel his presence or not, but believe that he is there. Well, suddenly life has a purpose, we are unique and special, watched, protected, and most importantly, not alone. We have something to have hope in, and a never-ending comfort of His presence. And of course, we also have the idea that there is life after death, as surely if there was a God we would have a purpose for life to continue in some form, after death. -If there is no God and no purpose how can there be an afterlife for us: we're pointless! But then maybe there isn't an afterlife, maybe it's just darkness and the loss of the sense of time...but that's a different topic.
Anyway, in my view, the world would be a much worse place without religion...although, saying that, it has caused a lot of conflict. But on the good side of religion, it preaches to people to be good people, and criminals converting to religion usually ends up well, and they become different people, some people who were previously drug addicts have been helped by religious charities and recovered and became better people. Of course, with all of the different religions and beliefs about, it has caused arguments, war, terrorism. Who knows what the solution is? Surely without religion we'd just give up being good people?
Anyways. I like those who can choose a religion and stick by it. It shows a lot of good qualities; commitment, devotion, compassion; I don't think of it as people simply being gullible. I hope religion doesn't just fade away one day, or we will have lost a very significant part of what makes us human.

ahhh interesting
ReplyDeletelmao you only just unblocked your blog so i just got a big list of all your blog posts since that fatefull ict lesson xD
look at it this way,
ReplyDeleteIn a world with no God, mankind has no inspiration to do good and earn a way into heaven
In a world with a god, mankind has the need to play nice, and it gives them a universal 'father' figure to look up to in times of need.
With no religion, this world would be in anarchy. For that, though i do not believe in God (as i have no proof), i am glad that some people do.
I respect their commitment to something that cannot be proved, and curse my own cynicism for preventing that in my case.
